Title: OSHA Update

 

Speaker: Michael Peelish

Abstract: As we enter the new year, what safety and health initiatives will come to fruition or be launched by OSHA? How will Congress act to address pending legislation covering EHS issues from workplace violence to heat stress, OSHA reform to funding initiatives? What changes are on the horizon for OSHA rules covering? What about any national emphasis programs? How will President Trump’s executive orders affect EHS operations? Will there be a final deregulatory push?

 

Biography: Michael works as a senior level attorney with a degree in engineering of mines with over 26 years working in the mining industry and with the OSHA-related facilities. He has handled cases before the MSHA and OSHA Review Commissions and in state and federal courts. He served has held executive positions in publicly traded mining companies with oversight for safety and health, human resources, environmental affairs, purchasing, government affairs, training, gas division, and continuous improvement. Throughout his career, he has worked with mine operators and OSHA facilities to implement safety and health programs, to audit operations against their safety and health programs, and to seek improved ways of protecting employees’ safety and health. He is now working for the Law Office of Adele L. Abrams PC and regularly performs safety and health audits and exposure assessments for his clients.

Title: The Right Way: Providing a common definition, setting expectations, and establishing roles and responsibilities for safety in your organization

 

Speaker: Michael Kleinpeter

Abstract: The responsibility for safety in any organization includes more than just safety personnel. Executive management, operations management, and the worker all have roles to play in establishing and maintaining a safe working environment.

 

The Right Way defines safety at the organizational level and establishes expectations as well as roles and responsibilities to make a positive impact on providing a safe working environment.

 

Biography: Including a 20 career as a safety director, Michael is also a published author of the book, “The Right Way”, and an Adjunct Professor for North Lake College.

 

Michael is a Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), and earned his Master of Engineering degree in Advanced Safety Engineering and Management in 2014 from the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Michael is also the Vice President for the Construction Safety Leadership Alliance that serves the Dallas/Ft. Worth metro area.

Michael and his wife reside in the northeast Dallas suburb of Sachse, Texas raising two sports-loving boys, and thoroughly enjoys coaching their baseball teams.

Title: Real Time Silica Monitoring Solution

 

Speaker: Kenia Ortiz, Frank Trujillo, Corey Bender

Abstract: Table 1 is fallible and compliance NIOSH 7500/0600 data is expensive, time consuming, and provides limited information.  There are low-cost dust monitors available to a competent person to fulfill the OSHA mandate and give the employer and employee a clear and confident view of the dust and the liability at their work sites.

 

Biographies:

Frank Trujillo, CSP, MSOS, MBA has worked in the construction industry as a safety professional for the last 18 years. His career began in North Carolina as a safety director for a general contractor where he focused on specialty contractor outreach and education opportunities. He has spent the last ten years as the Vice President of Safety for Miller and Long Concrete Construction and has focused on tackling difficult issues like silica exposures, falling object protection and crane safety. He serves on the national safety committee for the Associated Builders and Contractors and as a member of ANSI A10.

 

Corey Bender, CIH, CSP spent 10 years with the Virginia Occupational Safety and Health Program as a Health Compliance Officer and left as the Northern Virginia Regional Safety Director. Corey currently works for WMATA and is overseeing the silica protection program. Corey presented on this topic at AIHce2019 under the Right Sensors, Used Right session and published an article, Quartz-Busters, in The Synergist, Feb-2019. Corey has developed a low-cost, real-time dust monitor and has been validating its performance with NIOSH 7500/0600 sampling. He established a consulting company, Independence Safety & Industrial Hygiene to bring this strategy to the workplace.
